Homeownership is often framed as part of the American dream, but the reality is that many feel overwhelmed by the constant upkeep and unexpected costs. A new report from American Home Shield finds that the majority of homeowners (64%) say owning a home is stressful.

The financial toll is also significant. In 2025, homeowners spent an average of $3,737 on repairs, and 18% went into debt to cover those costs. To cope, many are turning to DIY solutions—78% say they’ve attempted repairs themselves, with 67% relying on online tutorials to figure out how to fix issues around the house.
